Sunset FilmFest, a vibrant four-day outdoor film festival set in the stunning city of Barcelona, Spain! Running from July 2nd to July 5th at the iconic Arc del Fòrum, this event offers a unique cinematic experience in an open-air venue, creating a beautiful backdrop for film lovers. Sunset FilmFest features an eclectic mix of award-winning films, independent productions, and international cinema, with screenings beginning in the late afternoon and continuing into the evening, allowing audiences to enjoy the magic of film under the stars. Beyond the films, the festival opens with a breathtaking light show and concludes with a colourful fun run, making it an event that appeals to cinephiles and those seeking a memorable summer experience in Barcelona.

The design challenge for Sunset FilmFest was to create a distinct and captivating visual identity that would embody the festival’s unique spirit and appeal to both local and international audiences. This included designing the festival’s logo, branding materials, and merchandise that would not only resonate with film enthusiasts but also capture the essence of an outdoor summer festival in the heart of Barcelona. The goal was to create a cohesive brand identity that could be easily recognised and would enhance the overall festival experience.

1.Conceptualisation and Research: The design process began with an in-depth exploration of Barcelona’s vibrant culture and the essence of outdoor film festivals. Research was conducted into the latest trends in festival branding and visual identities, focusing on how to create a design that is both modern and reflective of the festival’s unique atmosphere. Inspiration was drawn from the colours and energy of a summer evening in Barcelona, aiming to evoke the warm, inviting feel of the festival.

2.Logo Development: Several logo concepts were sketched, each aiming to capture the sunset theme that is central to the festival’s identity. After refining the ideas, the final logo design was chosen—a combination of a bright, rising sun with bold, colourful typography. The sun symbolises the warmth and energy of the event, while the vibrant colours represent the diversity and excitement of the films and activities at the festival. The logo was designed to be versatile, easily adaptable for various applications, from digital media to physical merchandise.

3.Branding and Merchandise Design: Following the logo finalisation, the next step involved expanding the visual identity across all festival materials. This included designing promotional posters, social media graphics, tickets, and festival merchandise such as t-shirts, hats, and tote bags. The merchandise was designed to be both functional and visually appealing, using the logo’s colour palette to ensure consistency. Each item was created to serve as a keepsake for festival-goers, reinforcing the festival’s identity and providing lasting memories of the event.

The design solution for Sunset FilmFest successfully captured the festival’s vibrant spirit and the essence of a summer evening in Barcelona. The logo, with its bold and bright design, became the cornerstone of the festival’s identity, reflecting both the energy of the event and the warmth of the city.
